If you exercise regularly but aren’t quite getting the results you want, do a self-check…
Are you an Active Couch Potato?
When you workout regularly, and eat right, but you’re not getting the results you want on the scale, you may be an Active Couch Potato.
What is an Active Couch Potato?
If you bust your butt in the gym but are otherwise on your butt the rest of the day… i.e. working a desk job, driving long distances, or sitting in front of the TV. You my friend, are an “Active Couch Potato.” Studies have proven that too much time spent sitting has an adverse effect of the metabolism independent of the amount of exercise you may or may not be doing. I found this awesome graphic explaining this phenomenon from mrepidemiology.com.
How to Stop Being an Active Couch Potato and Lose Weight
1) Make a conscious effort to stay moving – Park farther away from the storefront, vacuum daily, walk the dog more, play with your kids, hand wash your dishes, play a sport on a team or a game with your family or friends. Anything you can think of to keep yourself active and on your feet.
2) Add physical activity into your leisure time – Take a walk while returning calls, ride a stationary bike or walk on a treadmill while watching TV.
3) Use a pedometer – A pedometer counts the number of steps you take in a day, making your unplanned exercise conscious. Every day try to beat the number of steps you’ve taken.
4) Break up the time spent sitting on your butt – Take walk breaks at work. Do a lap around your block when you’re bored. Do crunches during the commercials breaks of your favorite show.
It works, if you work it!
