Starting a new workout at the gym can be a nerve-wracking experience. Not knowing how the equipment works and the worry of being judged by others can make the experience unpleasant. But just as you have to learn new things at a new job, learning how to use the new equipment at the gym will come easily. Worrying about what others think of you is the more difficult issue. You’ll be less anxious when you educated yourself about what you’re doing and take a few steps to ensure you’re secure and protected while you workout. The following are some tips to make you feel more comfortable and confident while working out at the gym:

Wear a Hoodie

Feeling uncomfortable, insecure, and paranoid while you’re working out isn’t fun! A hoodie helps can help youfeel secure and hides your breasts or any part of your body you don’t want others to see, while making you feel good. There are some other benefits of wearing a hoodie as well! Lifting the hood can keep your hair out of the way while you are working out. Pockets can allow you to store your iPod, cell phone, and keys while you are working out. Hoodies cause you to sweat more, and sweat purges toxins and impurities from the skin. It’s like a mini sauna session while you work out.

Listen to Music

Listening to music can help you get into the zone and just focus on yourself and be in the moment, instead of worrying about what others think of you. Putting on headphones can prevent gym bullies from trying to mess with you. Play some enthusiastic music you can jam out to. You can play “Eye of the Tiger” and train like Rocky! Cue the training montage!

Take a Workout Class

If you are unsure about what exercises to do, and worry about how that will make you look to others, consider taking a workout class. Then you will be in a room with other beginners and have a trainer who is responsible for teaching you how to use proper form while working out.

Hire a Trainer

If you are able, you can hire a private trainer to teach you how to work out properly. This enables you to have one on one time so that you can feel confident and be able to ask questions if the need arises. The trainer can take you from machine to machine, and help you create a workout that is tailored to your needs and goals. They are there to motivate and educate you.

Time Your Workout

You can time your workout to avoid crowds. Go first thing in the morning, or during a lunch break. There are fewer people there during those times if you feel self-conscious.

Do You!

The most important thing is to just “Do you”. Be confident in yourself and don’t worry about what others think. You may think someone staring at you is judging you, when they might think you look great and are wishing that they had legs like yours! Sometimes people are just bullies as well though. Ignore them and don’t let them get to you. Focus on your goals and keep a positive attitude.
