If you want glowing, hydrated, healthy-looking skin, body oils are your secret weapon.

As a Doctor of Functional Medicine and Holistic Nutritionist, I love oils because they’re food for your skin – rich in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and nutrients that feed your skin barrier instead of fighting it.

Most products on the shelves are filled with synthetic fragrance, preservatives, or silicones that suffocate, strip, or dry out your skin. Remember, your skin is your largest organ – it absorbs what you put on it. So if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t feed it to your skin… especially when addressing large surface areas of skin like your arms, legs, and torso.

This guide is a culmination of my own research and what I personally use and recommend – the pure, functional oils that truly support your body inside and out.

Why Body Oils Are Better Than Lotion

Most lotions contain water, alcohols, and fillers that evaporate quickly and disrupt the skin’s microbiome. Body oils mimic your skin’s natural sebum, helping lock in moisture and deliver nutrients that strengthen your barrier.

Applied right after showering (while skin is still slightly damp), they seal hydration and keep your skin soft and balanced all day.

From a functional standpoint, when your skin is chronically dry, red, or inflamed, that’s often a sign of internal imbalance – sluggish liver detox, microbiome disruption, or nutrient deficiency. Clean topical oils support your skin’s outer barrier while you restore balance from within.

Best Body Oils Overall (All Skin Types)

1. Jojoba Oil

Closest in structure to human sebum, jojoba balances oil production for both dry and oily skin types.

Benefits: Moisturizes, regulates sebum, antimicrobial, non-comedogenic
Best for: Daily hydration, sensitive skin, eczema-prone skin.
Best Oil:  This is the jojoba oil I love and recommend most.
Tips:

  • Use solo right after your shower or mix a few drops into aloe vera gel for lightweight hydration.
  • Pairs beautifully with squalane or rosehip oil to balance skin tone and barrier function.

2. Sweet Almond Oil

Lightweight and rich in vitamin E and linoleic acid, sweet almond oil soothes inflammation and boosts elasticity.

Benefits: Smooths texture, softens fine lines, improves tone
Best for: Dry or irritated skin, uneven skin tone
Best Oil:  This is the sweet almond oil I love and recommend most.
Tips:

  • Massage into damp skin before bed for baby-soft legs.
  • Mix with a little avocado oil for extra richness if you live in a dry climate.

3. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is naturally antimicrobial and deeply moisturizing, but best used on areas that aren’t breakout-prone.

Benefits: Strengthens barrier, soothes roughness, reduces transepidermal water loss
Best for: Very dry or cracked skin on legs, feet, elbows
Best Oil:  This is the coconut oil I love and recommend most.
Tips:

  • Use as an overnight foot mask with socks.
  • Avoid on chest/back if acne-prone.

Best Body Oils for Dry or Mature Skin

4. Avocado Oil

Rich in oleic acid and fat-soluble vitamins, avocado oil is a powerhouse for barrier repair and elasticity.

Benefits: Deep hydration, collagen support, anti-aging
Best for: Dry, thin, or sun-exposed skin
Best Oil:  This is the avocado oil I love and recommend most.
Tips:

  • Mix with argan oil for a “liquid silk” blend.
  • Add a few drops to your favorite clean body lotion to amplify moisture.

5. Argan Oil

Called “liquid gold” for a reason — high in vitamin E and ferulic acid, argan oil defends against oxidative stress and UV damage.

Benefits: Restores elasticity, reduces flakiness, protects from environmental stressors
Best for: Mature, dehydrated, or sun-damaged skin
Best Oil:  This is the argan oil I love and recommend most.
Tips:

  • Combine 2 parts argan + 1 part avocado oil for a luxe anti-aging blend.
  • Warm in your palms before applying to improve absorption.

Best for Sensitive or Reactive Skin

6. Squalane Oil

A stable, plant-derived lipid that mimics skin’s natural sebum and strengthens barrier integrity.

Benefits: Soothes inflammation, strengthens barrier, balances microbiome
Best for: Rosacea, eczema, or post-treatment skin
Best Oil:  This is the squalene oil I love and recommend most.

Tips:  Use alone or add a drop of jojoba for a calming blend that feels weightless.  Perfect post-wax or after shaving.

Best for Glow and Firmness

7. Rosehip Seed Oil

Naturally rich in vitamin A (retinoic acid) and C, rosehip promotes bright, even, youthful-looking skin.

Benefits: Improves texture, fades scars, evens tone
Best for: Dull, uneven, or scar-prone skin
Best Oil:  This is the rosehip seed oil I love and recommend most.
Tips: Blend with grapeseed oil for a dry-finish glow. Use at night — it’s light-sensitive but regenerating.

8. Grapeseed Oil

A “dry” oil high in polyphenols and vitamin E, perfect for toning, repair, prevention, and firming.

Benefits: Tightens skin, refines pores, fights oxidative stress
Best for: Oily or combination skin needing lightweight hydration
Best Oil:  This is the grapeseed seed oil I love and recommend most.
Tips: Use alone in humid weather or mix with marula for a firmer glow.

9. Marula Oil

High in amino acids and fatty acids for elasticity and smoothness.

Benefits: Firms, softens, enhances radiance
Best for: Aging or sun-damaged skin
Best Oil:  This is the best marula oil I love and recommend most.
Tips: Massage into chest and neck nightly. Mix 2 drops marula + 1 drop rosehip for a radiant overnight blend.

10. Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil is one of my favorite “inside-out” and topical oils for hormonally imbalanced or inflamed skin. It’s rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) – an omega-6 fatty acid that supports your skin barrier, balances oil production, and helps calm inflammation associated with hormonal shifts, eczema, and perimenopause.

Benefits: Balances hormones that affect the skin, reduces inflammation, strengthens barrier, improves hydration and elasticity
Best for: Hormonal breakouts, eczema, perimenopausal dryness, inflamed or itchy skin
Best Oil:  This is the best evening primrose oil I love and recommend most.
Tips:  Use 2–3 drops mixed with jojoba oil to calm redness or flare-ups on the body or face. Combine with squalane and rosehip seed oil for a glow-boosting, hormone-supportive blend.  You can also take evening primrose oil internally (with practitioner guidance) for deeper hormonal and skin benefits.

How to Mix and Match Body Oils

Think of your body oils like smoothies for your skin – the magic happens when you mix for synergy:

  • For Dry or Aging Skin: Argan + Avocado + Rosehip = firming, nourishing, brightening
  • For Sensitive Skin: Squalane + Calendula + Jojoba = soothing, barrier-restoring, anti-inflammatory
  • For Dull or Uneven Skin: Grapeseed + Rosehip + Marula = glow, tone, and antioxidant protection
  • For Rough or Irritated Skin: Coconut + Sweet Almond + Avocado = smoothing, softening, healing

Mix equal parts in your palm before applying to damp skin. Store blends in amber glass to preserve freshness.

When & How to Apply Body Oils

  • Apply on damp skin right after showering.
  • Use 2–3 drops per limb and massage upward.
  • Exfoliate weekly so oils can absorb fully.
  • For extra glow, add aloe vera gel or hyaluronic body serum underneath.

Functional Doctor Tip

Your skin is a mirror of your internal health. If dryness, redness, or irritation persist, that’s a sign to support your liver, gut, and hormones. That’s what I help clients do – address the root causes so your glow lasts far beyond the bottle.
