Fatty liver disease is a silent epidemic affecting millions and most people have no idea until it’s progressed. If you’re struggling with stubborn weight, fatigue, bloating, or brain fog and nothing you’re doing is working, there’s a huge chance your liver is the reason why.

As a functional health practitioner, I see this all the time. Women come to me saying, “I eat clean. I work out. I’m doing everything right.” Yet their bodies feel broken. They’re told it’s their age, their hormones, or that their labs are “normal.” But the truth? Many of them are dealing with fatty liver disease symptoms and don’t even know it.

In this post, you’ll learn:

  • What fatty liver disease is
  • Symptoms to watch for
  • What causes it
  • How it develops
  • And how to start healing it naturally using food, lifestyle changes, and food-based supplements

What Is Fatty Liver Disease?

Fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat accumulates in the liver, making up more than 5% to 10% of its total weight. This condition is called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) because it happens without alcohol use. It’s now also known as metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).

More than 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. have fatty liver disease—and most don’t even know it.

The danger? Left unaddressed, fatty liver disease can progress to inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure, and even liver cancer.

Stages of Fatty Liver Disease Progression from normal, to fatty, to fibrosis, to cirrhosis

After cirrhosis cancer development risks increase significantly.

Fatty Liver Disease Symptoms to Watch Out For

Fatty liver disease symptoms often develop slowly—and silently. But your body is always communicating. Here are the most common symptoms I see in practice:

  1. Fatigue and low energy – Even after a full night’s sleep, you feel exhausted.
  2. Inability to lose weight – Fatty liver creates weight loss resistance, especially in the belly area – that will be diet and exercise resistant.
  3. Bloating and upper-right abdominal pressure – Where your liver sits.
  4. Brain fog and mood swings – Poor liver function increases systemic inflammation.
  5. Hormone imbalances – Your liver regulates and clears hormones. Estrogen dominance and thyroid issues often trace back here.
  6. Skin issues – Acne, rashes, dandruff, itching, and even bruising.
  7. Elevated liver enzymes – May show up on labs but not always.
  8. Sugar and carb cravings – Strong cravings with little willpower often trace to liver and blood sugar dysfunction.
  9. Dark urine or yellowing skin/eyes – Advanced signs of bile stagnation or liver dysfunction.

Fatty Liver Disease Is a Symptom of Overload

Most people who can’t lose weight—despite doing everything right—are unknowingly giving their liver too much work to do.

What overburdens the liver?

  • Tylenol and OTC meds
  • Aspirin
  • Alcohol
  • Excessive or poor-quality supplements (especially ashwagandha, turmeric, green tea extract, garcinia)
  • Synthetic hormones (birth control, HRT, synthetic melatonin)
  • Pesticides (glyphosate)
  • Antibiotics (past & present)
  • Chemical-based skincare (retinoids, SPF, fragrances)
  • Plant toxins (lectins, oxalates, salicylates)
  • Nutrient imbalance (like extreme keto, vegan, or carnivore diets)
  • Plastics, mold, and heavy metals

Fat follows toxicity.
Your body stores toxins in fat to protect you. When the liver gets backed up, fat storage increases—especially around your midsection.

What Causes Fatty Liver Disease?

Fatty liver disease is caused by a combination of diet, toxicity, stress, and deficiencies. The most common contributors I see:

  1. High sugar, processed foods, seed oils – Especially fructose, corn syrup, and refined grains.
  2. Nutrient deficiencies – Low choline, magnesium, B vitamins, and antioxidants impair detox.
  3. Gut dysfunction and leaky gut – Gut toxins enter the bloodstream and inflame the liver.
  4. Chronic stress and poor sleep – Impairs hormone conversion and liver function.
  5. Toxin exposure – Chemicals, mold, alcohol, pesticides, and more.
  6. Supplement abuse – Too many, too often, or low-quality formulas that damage liver tissue.

The Liver-Weight Connection

In my experience, most women who feel like their bodies are broken are actually experiencing liver dysfunction that’s gone unnoticed for years.

The liver is your detox engine, hormone converter, fat metabolizer, and metabolic regulator. When it’s overworked, everything else gets out of balance—your mood, your weight, your energy.

The good news? The liver is one of the few organs that can regenerate… if you stop harming it and give it the right support.

How to Reverse Fatty Liver Disease Naturally

Here’s the 4-part approach I use with clients to help reverse fatty liver disease symptoms and repair damage in 90 days:

✔ Reduce Toxic Load

Get rid of what’s clogging your liver:

  • Low-quality supplements
  • Processed foods and seed oils
  • Alcohol
  • Mold & environmental toxins
  • OTC and unnecessary meds
  • Pesticides and chemicals

You can’t heal your liver while you’re still harming it. I explain exactly what to avoid in all of my nutrition programs.

✔ Support Real Detox Pathways

Once you reduce the burden, you need to support the liver’s detox functions with the right nutrients:

  • Nutrients to activate Phase 1 and 2 liver detox
  • Fiber to bind and carry toxins out
  • Minerals and antioxidants to repair inflammation

This is exactly what my Reset Cleanse is designed to do. It’s a 7-day food-based detox that flushes out toxins gently while giving your liver the nutrition it needs. Many people lose up to 10 pounds in a week and feel dramatically better within days.

✔ Eat for Your Metabolic Type

After the cleanse, you have to eat in a way that keeps your liver healthy and prevents toxic buildup. That’s where my Metabolic-Type Meal Plan comes in.

When you eat foods that don’t match your metabolic type, it creates inflammation, cravings, and weight gain. But when you eat for your type? You feel energized, lean, and clear.

✔ Use Food-Based Supplements

Food is foundational—but it’s not always enough to reverse years of stress and toxic exposure.

That’s why I recommend food-based supplements that:

  • Support detox pathways
  • Nourish liver and gut tissue
  • Restore hormonal balance and energy

No synthetic vitamins. No fillers. Just clean, functional nutrition that your body actually uses. No guessing—my protocols are mapped out clearly for you.

✔ Follow a Structured Plan

The liver needs consistency—not gimmicks. My Reset Cleanse, Metabolic-Type Plan, and food-based supplement systems work together to give your body rhythm, relief, and results.

Most people feel it working in days. And it’s easy to follow, so you stay consistent and see real change.
