How To Improve Gut Health: Real Advice From a Functional Practitioner

You’ve probably heard the usual gut health advice before:
Take a probiotic. Eat fermented foods. Reduce stress. Drink more water.

But if you’re still bloated, constipated, foggy, inflamed, puffy, or stuck at a weight that makes no sense… That advice is probably doing nothing for you. And in some cases? It could be making things worse.

As a functional practitioner, I can tell you: Gut issues are rarely solved by surface-level tips. You need real answers, not recycled wellness fluff.

For example… watch this video.  Look at the symptoms, then what the GI tract looks like.

Issues like this don’t just happen overnight.  Do you really think throwing some probiotics is going to fix it?  NOPE!

Let’s talk about what is causing gut health issues most.  These are things that most people struggling with gut health issues totally miss.

Then I’ll cover what actually works to help safely heal the gut and reverse symptoms quickly & naturally

How to Improve Gut Health: What Most Advice Gets Wrong

1. You Might Have Parasites, Mold, or Stealth Infections affecting gut health (Yes, Even If You’re “Healthy”)

Most gut protocols skip this entirely, but in my practice?

Parasites, mold toxicity, bacterial overgrowth, and stealth infections are often the real root cause of bloating, constipation, fatigue, skin issues, stubborn fat, and other pesky issues like headaches, vision problems, oral health problems, and joint pain.

Here’s what I see over and over again:

  • You’ve changed your diet and added supplements—but your symptoms are getting worse
  • You’ve cut gluten, dairy, and sugar—but the bloating still comes back
  • Your cravings are intense and persistent
  • You feel more inflamed, puffy, or tired after meals
  • You’ve been told everything looks “normal,” but nothing feels normal
  • You have symptoms of parasites

If that sounds familiar, the problem isn’t your willpower or your food. It’s the deeper imbalances and infections no one’s testing for.  And unfortunately random supplements and cookie cutter diets can make gut health worse when parasites are present.  And you also can’t just start killing them without building your body back up first.

How to improve gut health with pathogens & parasites?  The ONLY way is to pinpoint  what you actually have because different infections require a different approach. But anyone with an infection needs to focus on clean nutrition and boosting immunity… because pathogens like this only happen in a weak host.

If you suspect you have pathogens I’d have to recommend a one on one consult or you can watch this webinar where I explain more about how this happens.

2. Most Probiotics Are Dead and don’t improve gut health (But the Right Ones in the Right Terrain Can Be Magic)

Let’s clear this up:

Most probiotics don’t work. Especially if you bought them from a random shelf, online retailer, or influencer’s Amazon list.

If they’re not shelf-stable or refrigerated and shipped correctly, they’re dead before they even reach your gut.
Even the live ones won’t do much if your gut lining is damaged or you’re dealing with pathogens and inflammation.

BUT… when used properly, practitioner-grade probiotics can be incredibly effective.
They help repopulate your microbiome, restore balance, and support immunity—but only when:

  • The terrain (your gut environment) is prepared
  • Infections are addressed
  • You’re feeding the right bacteria with the right foods

Otherwise, you’re wasting your time (and money).

3. Fermented Foods Could Be Making Your Gut Health Worse

Kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha might be Instagram darlings, but here’s the truth:
Fermented foods are NOT for everyone.

If you have candida, SIBO, mold exposure, or histamine intolerance, these can inflame your gut, feed the bad bugs, and make you feel even worse.

I see this constantly: social media wellness girls pushing fermented foods like they’re a magic bullet for gut health.  But your gut isn’t a trend—it’s a highly complex, individualized system. And what works for one person could wreck someone else’s progress.

This is exactly why working with a professional matters. You need a strategy based on you.

4. You’ll Never Have a Healthy Gut With a Dysregulated Nervous System

Your gut and nervous system are in constant communication.
If you’re stuck in fight-or-flight, your body literally shuts down digestion, detox, and repair.

That’s why so many gut symptoms show up alongside:

  • Anxiety or irritability
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Wired-but-tired energy
  • Poor sleep or restless nights
  • Mood swings and burnout
  • That feeling of being “off” in your own body

Regulating your nervous system is non-negotiable.

That’s why I created Magic Moves, my somatic movement program designed to calm your system, release stored tension, and help your body feel safe again—so real healing can happen.  You can’t heal anything with a dysregulated nervous system.

5. What Actually Helps Improve Gut Health (Without Guessing)

Here are a few things you can start doing right now that actually move the needle in terms of improving gut health that are safe to start:

  • Prioritize sleep – You can’t heal if you’re not sleeping soundly and through the night. Use these tips to sleep better.
  • Ditch artificial foods, gluten, dairy, artificial sweeteners and seed oils – They feed pathogens, wreck your gut lining, block nutrient absorption, trigger inflammation, and flare symptoms.
  • Support your liver – If your detox pathways are clogged, your gut can’t heal.  Consider my Reset Cleanse because it really helps open and drain detox pathways which is critical for gut health.  Gut issues = liver issues.  Liver issues = gut issues.
  • Try gentle somatic movements – Even 5–10 minutes a day helps rebalance your nervous system – my Magic Moves Somatic Exercise Program has everything you need + more.
  • Use practitioner-grade supplements – Stop guessing and stop using random, unregulated supplements. Save 15% and get practitioner grade probiotics from my fullscript dispensary.
  • Get tested if needed – You can’t fix what you don’t know is broken – not sure where you start?  Let’s work together!
  • Stop following random advice – Especially from people who don’t know your entire history, habits, and symptoms
