If you’re Googling why am i not losing weight even though you’re eating healthy, working out, and doing your best to be consistent, I want you to take a deep breath.
I’ve been there. The kind of stuck that makes you think, “Maybe my body just hates me.” And as a Doctor of Functional Medicine, holistic nutritionist, and personal trainer, I can tell you this with my whole chest:
When weight loss isn’t happening, it’s rarely because you’re not trying hard enough. It’s usually because something hidden is creating resistance.
What “doing everything right” usually looks like
Most women define “doing everything right” as:
- Eating mostly whole foods
- Cutting back on sugar and snacks
- Working out consistently
- Drinking more water
- In a calorie deficit
- Trying to be good
And if that’s you, I see you. But here’s the missing piece:
You can do all the right things and still be stuck if the right things are not the right things for your body.
So let’s connect the dots and make this make sense.
why am i not losing weight even though i’m doing everything right?
Below are 10 little known reasons you might not be losing weight, and what to do about each one.
1. You’re eating healthy, but the foods don’t match your metabolic type
Why it affects weight: “Healthy” isn’t one size fits all. If your meals don’t match your metabolism, you can feel hungrier, crave more sugar, recover poorly, hold inflammation, and struggle to create a consistent calorie deficit without feeling like you’re fighting your body all day.
What to do: Find out what your body actually responds to so you stop guessing. Take my Metabolic Type Quiz.
2. Your blood sugar is unstable, even on a clean diet
Why it affects weight: Blood sugar swings drive cravings, overeating, fatigue, and that “I need something sweet or I’ll die” feeling. They also make it harder to build lean muscle and recover, which matters for metabolism.
Signs this is you:
- Crashing mid afternoon
- Needing something sweet after meals
- Feeling shaky or irritable if you go too long without food
- Nighttime cravings that feel out of your control
What to do: Start stabilizing cravings and blood sugar first. Read How to Stop Sugar Cravings.
Important segue: Blood sugar swings are stressful to the body. And stress can also create blood sugar swings. Which brings us to the next reason.
3. High stress and high cortisol are keeping your body in fat storage mode
Why it affects weight: When cortisol stays elevated, your body gets more reactive to cravings, more likely to hold water, and more likely to store fat around the midsection. It can also make you more insulin resistant, which makes fat loss harder even if you’re eating “perfect.”
What this looks like: You’re disciplined all day, then cravings hit at night. You feel wired but tired. Your belly feels puffy. You’re doing the most, but your body is not responding.
What to do: Learn how stress hormones block fat loss so you can fix the real problem. Start here: Cortisol and Weight Gain.
4. Your nervous system is dysregulated and your body doesn’t feel safe
Why it affects weight: This is the part nobody wants to talk about, but it’s real. If your nervous system is stuck in fight or flight from chronic overwhelm, grief, trauma, or just years of pushing through, your body can hold weight as a protective response. Not because it’s dramatic. Because it’s trying to survive.
What to do: Give your body a signal of safety daily. Start with my sample class: Somatic Exercise Sample Class.
5. You’re inflamed and you’re mistaking water retention for fat gain
Why it affects weight: Inflammation can cause puffiness, swelling, stubborn belly bloat, joint pain, headaches, and scale fluctuations that look like “fat gain” even when you’re doing everything right.
What to do: Reduce inflammation first, then reassess progress. Start here: How to Reduce Inflammation Naturally.
6. Gut imbalance and pathogens are driving cravings and slowing progress
Why it affects weight: When your gut is inflamed or imbalanced, you can crave more sugar, feel hungrier, absorb nutrients poorly, and struggle with bloating and fatigue. Some pathogens can also mess with appetite and cravings in ways that feel totally irrational. 100% of my clients in my practice have pathogens blocking their ability to lose weight.
What to do: If symptoms line up, start by learning the signs so you can make a smart next move. Read Symptoms of Parasites in Humans.
7. Hormone imbalances are blocking fat loss
Why it affects weight: Hormones influence hunger, cravings, where you store fat, water retention, mood, motivation, and how your body responds to a calorie deficit. If hormones are imbalanced, it can feel like you’re doing everything right and your body is ignoring you.
What to do: Learn which hormones most commonly drive stubborn weight and what pushes them out of balance. Start here: 10 Hormones that Cause Hormonal Weight Gain.
8. You’re nutrient deficient even though you eat healthy
Why it affects weight: Your metabolism runs on nutrients. If you’re deficient, your body can struggle with energy production, detox, hormone balance, and recovery. Deficiency can also increase cravings and make it harder to stay consistent.
What to do: Identify symptom patterns that point to deficiencies so you can stop guessing. Start here: Nutrient Deficiency.
9. You’re not getting quality sleep, so your hunger hormones and cravings are louder
Why it affects weight: Poor sleep increases hunger, reduces impulse control, raises stress hormones, and makes blood sugar regulation messier. It also slows recovery and makes workouts feel harder, which impacts consistency.
What to do: Support deeper sleep and reduce nighttime inflammation with this delicious addition: Tart Cherry Juice.
10. Toxic load is contributing to inflammation and metabolic slowdown
Why it affects weight: When your detox load is high, inflammation can rise and hormones can get disrupted, especially when endocrine disruptors are involved. This is one of those “little known” reasons women stay puffy, tired, and resistant even on a clean diet.
What to do: Start with the easiest high impact exposure reductions that don’t require you to live in a bubble. Read Microplastics in Food You Should Avoid.
What to do next if you’re still asking why am i not losing weight
If you’ve tried to do this on your own and you’re still stuck, you probably don’t need more tips. You need a plan and practitioner eyes on your specific pattern.
Because you cannot out exercise a plan that doesn’t match your body.
If you want me to review your symptoms, history, and what you’ve already tried so we can map out what’s actually blocking you, book an Initial Consultation & Case Review.
If you’ve been asking why am i not losing weight and you are exhausted from doing “all the right things,” you are not alone. This has been one of my biggest insecurities too, and it’s one of the most common patterns I see in smart, motivated women.
Pick the one reason that made you feel called out in a helpful way, and take action on it. Results require action, but they do not require perfection.
You deserve to feel good in your body. And you deserve a strategy that works with your physiology, not against it.
