Looking for the best natural, truly healthy sunscreen for your face and body? This is for you! I consider myself a sunscreen connoisseur because I’ve been using is religiously for the last 25 years.
Why Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable
In the holistic world, some influencers claim sunscreen is a scam – but I couldn’t disagree more. People say sunscreen is pointless and that it can cause skin cancer. That’s not true. The WRONG sunscreen can be pointless and cancer isn’t caused by one thing (like sunscreen)… it’s the result of MANY things coming together that result in a diagnosis. But sunscreen can absolutely help prevent it… assuming you’re using the right kind.
Having had near‑misses with skin cancer, and living with scars all over my body from nearly 20 years ago, I would never go without sun protection again. I’m actually so grateful for my health scare because it motivated me to get serious about the sun and I’ve been using sunscreen without fail ever since. After a lifetime of slathering, I can instantly recognize who skipped it in their youth – and I can tell you, skin cancer and premature aging are real.
Every older woman I speak with says her #1 regret? Not wearing sunscreen when she was younger… for both beauty and health reasons. That’s why I’m passionate about this message – not just for beauty, but for your health.
Not All Sunscreens Are Created Equal
Here’s what makes a sunscreen unhealthy or ineffective:
- Unsafe chemical filters, like oxybenzone or octinoxate – linked to hormone disruption and coral reef damage
- Insufficient UVA coverage – SPF only measures UVB; you need broad‑spectrum to prevent aging
- Too low SPF, or applied too thinly
- Sensitizing or pore‑clogging additives, such as parabens, fragrances, or oils
- Hidden nano‑particles or chemical sunscreens despite “natural” labeling
💡 Mineral-based sunscreens (zinc oxide + titanium dioxide) form a physical barrier and are safer for skin, health, and reefs.
My Top 3 favorite Healthy Sunscreens for Face
Here are my daily go-to face sunscreens – I use them every day:
Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50
- Lightweight, oil‑free, broad‑spectrum SPF 50 with antioxidants
- User reviews praise the non‑sticky texture and invisible finish
- I use this when I’ll be indoors and not wearing makeup/going anywhere
Elta MD UV Daily Tinted SPF 40 (with tint)
Elta MD UV SPF 40 – (clear – no tint)
- Lightweight tinted mineral formula with zinc oxide; hyaluronic acid hydrates
- This is tinted and has great coverage I use in lieu of foundation
MD Solar Sciences Mineral Tinted SPF 30
- Silky, antioxidant-rich, broad-spectrum with a matte tint
- This is tinted and has great coverage I use in lieu of foundation – I use it when the UV isn’t as strong. It feels like a primer and reminds me of my smashbox primer.
💡Pro Tip: Let the sunscreen dry fully before applying makeup or powder over top to avoid pilling.
Best Natural, Healthy Sunscreens for the Body
For full‑body sun protection, I love these three clean, reef-safe options:
Thrive Natural Care BodyShield SPF 50
- High‑strength SPF, reef-safe, recyclable packaging, water-resistant, non-toxic, great for outdoor use
How I Use Natural Sunscreen Every Day
- Daily (indoors or grocery run): I apply my Paula’s Choice fluid as soon as I wake up and I put if all over my face, neck. hands, shoulders, and decollate.
- Going out? I layer on a tinted formula instead – Elta MD or MD Solar Sciences. I used these sunscreens instead of foundation. After it dries I use concealer and a little dust of powder and it works great. You have to let it absorb before applying makeup though FYI.
- Body days, I use one of the mineral body sunscreens on my body.
- Always: Let it dry first, then apply makeup or clothes.
- Reapply face sunscreen or body spray every 2 hours when outside.
Bonus Protection: UV-Blocking Shirts & Hats
Sunscreen is essential, but physical sun protection is just as important – especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors.
That’s why I swear by UV-blocking rash guard shirts and wide-brimmed hats. You can wear whatever hat suits your style, but when it comes to shirts, I don’t mess around. I found the best UV-blocking shirts on Amazon – and I have them in just about every single color.
Whether I’m:
-
On a walk
-
Landscaping or gardening
-
Riding my bike
-
Walking the beach
-
Out on the boat
You will never see me without one of these shirts on. They’re lightweight, breathable, flattering, and offer serious UPF 50+ sun protection.
If you’re going to be in the sun for more than 15 minutes, this is a smart and healthy no-brainer addition to your skincare routine – and your skin will thank you.
Final Thoughts about these Natural Sunscreens
Sunscreen is one of the easiest, most effective things you can do to protect your health, skin, and future self. Not optional-it’s essential. As someone with personal battle scars, I can’t stress this enough.
Choose clean, mineral-based, broad-spectrum formulas, and make it your daily ritual. Your future self – and skin – will thank you.
✨ Here’s to smart sun habits and glowing skin – safely!
