Ever get in a bad mood and all-of-the-sudden find your healthy habits are the first thing to fly out the window? For example… you get some bad news, your finances are stressing you out or you get into a tiff with your significant other… or maybe you’re just having an ‘off’ day and suddenly working out and eating healthy just doesn’t seem that appealing. Like your inner fat girl is saying, I’m done, give me chips (cookies/cake/crackers) and a remote! I’m tapping out!

I get it! I used to be a horrible emotional eater. (The worst!!) So now when life kicks me in the crotch with some unexpected bad news, or if I’m feeling like I’m in a funk…

Before I got my Mind Right I used to run for food or throw myself a little pity party by skipping the gym to protest my bad days. I always say my blessings wear disguises…

How to Feel Happy (fast)

My personal struggles – and my journey to learn ways to fix myself – have inspired today’s episode of CCtv.  In it, I share the exact 10 tips I’ve been using to keep my chin up and weight down.

They’re the same tips I suggest to my clients to improve their mood in 15 minutes flat so they can break emotional/binge eating habits.  They seriously work, if you work them.

So the next time you’re feeling too stressed, hormonal, or upset, try one (or more) of these tips to step off the funk train so you can get back to feeling happy, healthy and fit fast.

#MindRightBodyTight

Isn’t it amazing how a bad mood can translate into craving bad i.e. unhealthy things? There is a bad mood-food connection. Actually, it’s more like a bad mood, bad/unhealthy thing connection.

People (in general) are susceptible to all mind or mood altering substances – especially emotional eaters – when in a bad mood. I’m not necessarily talking about drugs either… there are 4 main things that can alter your mental state and change the way you feel almost instantly.

They are: Processed food, alcohol, cigarettes, and caffeine.

Oh, p.s. these are also the best sellers at grocery stores.

So if you’re the kind of person that finds yourself reaching for food, a drink, cig, or coffee constantly throughout the day… then (I used to reach go for peanuts, Wheat Thins and vodka!) I highly recommend trying one of the following 10 ways to snap yourself out of your bad mood. These 10 tips are positive, fun and productive ways will snap you out of your funky mood and work in 15 minutes or less and will keep your mind off of food or other unhealthy, soul-sucking alternatives.

10 Tips to Feel Happy

Take some Deep Breaths

For a quick fix, take some slow, deep breaths to calm yourself down. First, close your eyes, and focus completely on your breathing. Inhale through your nose for a count of 5, hold it for a count of 5, and exhale for a count of 5. Keep repeating until you feel better making sure you focus only on the sensation of the air going in your nose, to your lungs, and out of your mouth. If you are focusing on your breathing, you can’t focus on things that stress you!

Tap out

Take a Break When you’re overwhelmed, stressed and continue to work. Having too much to do is like struggling to get out of a pit of quicksand. Learn how to say no to people when you are feeling stressed out.

Jam Out

Ever forget to take your iPod to the gym? Ever go shopping and your favorite song comes on? They do this so that you’ll stay in the store longer and buy more stuff. Music can make you forget things. If you are focusing on music that makes you feel good, then you can’t focus on the negative.

Play Dress Up

Looking good = feeling good. Put on your best outfit, do your makeup and style your hair. Look at yourself in the mirror. When we think we look good, our self-esteem gets a boost.

Sweat

Exercise, especially cardio, such as running or dancing, causes the body to release endorphins, which are feel-good hormones. Go for a quick 10-minute run. Turn on some music and dance for a few minutes. You’ll feel better afterward!

Go Outside

Sunlight has been proven to be a mood booster. Sunlight absorption allows your body to produce vitamin D, which is linked to mood. Research has linked low levels of vitamin D in the bloodstream to depression. So go out, take a walk. Or just soak up some sun for a few minutes. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

Stretch

Stress causes your muscles to become tense, and stretching relieves that tension. Stretching is also an exercise, and therefore can help release mood-boosting endorphins. Try some gentle yoga poses for a quick boost.

Call Someone Who Cares

We all need a good shoulder to lean on or someone willing to bend an ear to listen to our problems. Sometimes just getting our frustrations out and having someone to emphasize with us can make us feel better. Just make sure you’re there to listen when the person has problems as well!

Show yourself Some Love

Create your own oasis in your bathtub. Light some scented candles and relax. Have a miniature spa session. Paint your nails. Massage your own neck and shoulders. Meditation can be a great way to relieve stress as well. Do something you enjoy such as painting a picture or reading a book.

Think Happy Thoughts

If your mind is cluttered with negativity, write down 3 things you are thankful for. If something good happens to you during the day, write it down as well. If you feel bad, come back to the list and read it.  I think you’ll really benefit from my Happy Thoughts Challenge.  It’s a powerful challenge designed to help you focus your mind to the things in your life you should be grateful for… and when that happens, happiness follows. : )

It works if you work it, so work it, you (and your happiness) is so worth it!
